In historical reference, Amritsar is so known asRamdaspur and Amabarsar. The history of Amritsar goes way back to the time of Indus Valley Civilization and is also believed to be the birthplace of Lavh and Kush (Sons of Shri Ram Ji). In the 16th century the city was finally linked with the teachings of Sikhism. Located in the Punjab it derives its name from Amrit Sarovar, which is the holy pool around the Golden Temple. Amritsar was constructed by Shri Guru Ram Das Ji in 1574, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, the land was purchased by him for700 rupees.
The foundation of Shri Harmandir Sahib was laid by Guru Arjan Sahib Ji on January 3, 1588, and by 1601, it was fully completed. From April 13, 1634, till 1709 the Mughals vanquish Amritsar many times and in 1984 Indian Government attached Golden Temple and sentiments of the Sikhs. Shri Harmandir Sahib became prey to the evil intentions of Afghan army who demolished it several times. The Gurudwara was re-constructed and in 1830, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji got interiors of the Gurudwara gold-plated, since then people address this holy place as Golden Temple .
In 1846, the British settled and made Lahore a capital of Punjab and, started frequently visiting Amritsar. Under there givernment Amritsar Municipal Corporation was started, the 1st Sikh college – Khalsa College was built and the city was electrified&buatified. In September 1915, Amritsar was declared as a “Holy City” by the British government.
